It has been years since I've read a book I could not put down and I thank Eric for taking me, and all hands willing, aboard on his solo journey of adventure, romance, redemption and self-discovery. I am a sailor at heart although one need not be to appreciate every aspect of this book which moves to the rhythms of tide and torrent, counterbalanced with a single heartbeat of hope. Eric writes with a paintbrush, touching and retouching sights, sounds and smells within in a blue collage that at times makes us shake and shudder. If Melville and Hemingway ever bore a child together, he/she might write like Eric Best.I stumbled onto Eric's story by accident, ironically a condition I believe never truly exists. It has been over 30 years that I recall meeting him and his first wife over several games of Bridge while an ensuing casual friendship developed. I can vouch for his "patience and perseverance:" My poor play demanded it and as such, neither drew forth his competitive nature nor his anger and pain. In retrospect, his seemingly deep appreciation and affinity for Billy Joel's earlier edgy songs might have been an indicator, had I been more perceptive. But we were all younger and blinder and played our cards close to our vest. Over much time and distance, it is a special joy to discover how much a friend from long ago has grown both out of himself and into himself. You will find growth of your own by reading his story.
Eric ends his work with a quote from Gibran so let me end this review with one in kind on children:

Two stories woven together the adventure of solo sailing and coming to terms with family violence. Both the doing and writing about them required courage. The prose is graceful and strong.
Into My Father's Wake is the tale of two simultaneous journeys a harrowing single-handed 5000-mile sail from San Francisco to Hawaii & back, and a probing self re-examination of the author's complicated relationship with the abusive father who taught him to sail and the author's consequent struggles with anger,alcoholism and serially failed relationships. Honest, lyric, hallucinatory, and scary. No sailing expertise required.
Eric Best is a natural writer who uses his vast "love affair" with the written word to take the reader on a physical sailing journey that is demanding of stamina and strength, but, more importantly, is driven by the writer's spiritual exploration of his life, his family and his future. As the writer struggles with successfully completing a solo sail from the West Coast to Hawaii and back, he gains strength and confidence as a father, son, potential "mate" and person. This is an adventure story, yes, but so much more.
I read this book some time ago on my and loved it so much that I bought print edition as didn't seem permanent enough. I can't get it out of my mind -- when friends ask for book recommendations, Into My Father's Wake always floats to the top of my "must read" list. The writing is beautiful, the journey is spellbinding, and the back story about Eric's relationship with his father adds meaning to Eric's mental and physical journey. Job well done. I hope to see more of this author.
Best's story is cinematic and yet painfully intimate. It's impossible not to root for him in his sea-going and interior quests. Sometimes the events on his boat are heart-pounding scary even though you know he survived to write the book. His many descriptions of the sea are verbal paintings.
Eric Best's "Into My Father's Wake" is a profoundly felt memoir that traces the author's ark of self-discovery both through a solo passage to Hawaii and through the memory of his relationship with his father. It is filled with deeply affecting stories about failed marriages, the strange mixture of love and brutality that the author's father showed him, lonely terror amid storms and life-threatening accidents thousands of miles from land, and even low comedy - though I wouldn't recommend his recipe for Sailing-Alone-to-Hawaii-Exploding-Tuna-Casserole.
The unflinching honesty of this close-up self-examination can be tough to take, but "Into My Father's Wake" was hard to put down. Apart from a few odd digressions about corporations "in thrall to the power of global capital" and "the corporatization of life," the book rang true. The tale has many twists, mirroring the author's own years of conflicted feelings and self-doubt, until it ultimately becomes a moving story of forgiveness. As he painfully comes to forgive his father, he ultimately must learn to forgive himself.
WOW! 'Into My Father's Wake' is an excellent book on every level. It's a beautifully crafted memoir of an adult son coming to terms with the stormy relationship he shared with his larger-than-life father (what son's father isn't?), a courageous (reckless???) journey, and a road to discovery of who he is and what his place is in all the other relationships in his life.
I found myself all throughout this book. The explorer in me is tantalized (do I have the guts to take on a challenge like that???); the son, touched and liberated; the lover and ex-husband, nourished and reassured; and the future father, excited to get a glimpse of the love Best shares with his daughter...
